How to use
Create a torn-photo effect in four steps
Choose your photo, pick a tear direction, shape the ripped edge and then finish
the design with paper, shadow and background settings.
1
Choose your photo
Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image from your device.
2
Pick a tear style
Choose a torn border, vertical tear or horizontal tear depending on the design you want.
3
Shape the rip
Adjust tear depth, roughness, gap and piece offset to make the tear subtle or dramatic.
4
Finish & download
Fine-tune the paper edge, background and shadow, then save the finished design.
What you can do
Build your own ripped-paper style
Use the controls to create anything from lightly distressed paper edges to a
strongly separated two-piece tear.
Torn borderAdd an irregular ripped edge around all four sides of the photo.
Vertical tearSplit the photograph from top to bottom with a rough paper gap.
Horizontal tearTear the image across the frame for a broken-photo or collage style.
Tear depthIncrease how far the irregular ripped edge extends into the photograph.
RoughnessControl how uneven and jagged the torn paper appears.
Tear gapChange the visible space between the torn pieces.
Piece offsetMove the torn halves apart to create more separation and depth.
Paper edgesAdd a thicker edge so the rip feels more like torn paper than a simple cut.
ShadowsAdd depth beneath the pieces so they appear raised from the background.
Pro tip:
For a believable ripped-paper result, start with medium roughness, a fairly small
gap, a visible paper edge and a soft shadow. Very large gaps usually read more
like two separate images than one photograph that has been torn.
Choosing a tear style
Which effect works best?
Torn border
Best for vintage photos, scrapbook pages, posters and images that need a handmade paper edge.
Vertical tear
Useful for before-and-after comparisons, split portraits and dramatic relationship or story edits.
Horizontal tear
Works well for collage designs, album artwork and images that need a strong visual break across the frame.
Small gap
Keeps the photograph feeling like one torn object and usually looks more realistic.
Large gap
Creates a stronger graphic split when realism matters less than visual impact.
Paper + shadow
Use both when you want the torn pieces to feel layered above a coloured background.

Tips for a more convincing torn-photo effect
Let the tear support the subject
Avoid placing a strong tear directly across an important face unless that is part of the intended design.
Match roughness to the image
Older or distressed photos suit more irregular edges, while modern designs often look cleaner with lower roughness.
Use background colour deliberately
Neutral backgrounds feel like paper or a tabletop; stronger colours can turn the effect into a poster or social graphic.

Browser-based editing
Edit without changing your original photo
The standard Torn Photo Effect is designed to process the selected photograph
in your browser and create a separate torn-photo copy for download. You can
experiment with different tear styles without changing the original file on your device.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the Torn Photo Effect free?
Yes. You can upload a photograph, create the torn-paper effect and download the finished result directly from the tool.
Do I need an account?
No. The Torn Photo Effect can be used directly in your browser without creating an account.
What is the difference between Torn Border and Vertical Tear?
Torn Border creates ripped edges around the outside of the entire photograph. Vertical Tear splits the image into two pieces with a tear running from the top to the bottom.
Can I tear the picture horizontally?
Yes. Choose Horizontal Tear to create a rip running from one side of the image to the other.
What does Tear Depth do?
Tear Depth controls how far the irregular torn edge extends into the photograph. A higher setting creates a deeper and more dramatic rip.
What does Roughness do?
Roughness controls how uneven and jagged the edge becomes. Lower values create a calmer tear while higher values create a more irregular ripped-paper appearance.
What does Gap do?
Gap controls the amount of visible space between the torn pieces when using the vertical or horizontal tear modes.
Can I change the background behind the tear?
Yes. Use the background colour control to change the colour visible around or between the torn pieces.
Can I make the tear look more like real paper?
Yes. Turn on the paper-edge option and combine it with moderate roughness and shadow to give the photograph more depth and a paper-like appearance.
What image formats can I upload?
The tool supports common browser-compatible image formats including JPG, PNG and WebP.
Does the tool change my original photograph?
No. Your original photo remains unchanged on your device. The tool creates a separate torn-photo version for you to download.
Are my photos permanently stored?
The standard Torn Photo Effect works in your browser and does not need to permanently store your photograph in order to create the finished image.
