Where Should You Put a Watermark?
There is no single correct position. The best location depends on whether your priority is subtle branding, readability or making the watermark harder to crop away.
A common choice for photographer names and logos. It keeps branding visible without dominating the image.
Harder to remove by simply cropping, but it can distract more from the photograph.
Positioning a watermark near an important part of the image may make casual cropping more difficult.
A watermark does not always need to be fully opaque. A partly transparent mark can remain identifiable while allowing more of the photograph to show through.
Tips for Professional-Looking Watermarks and Captions
Use enough contrast between the text and photograph. An outline or background box can help on busy images.
Leave some breathing room around text and logos so they do not appear cramped or accidentally cropped.
Using the same logo, position and approximate size across a set of images can create a more professional look.
Text that looks large on a desktop may become difficult to read when an image appears smaller on a phone.
Transparent PNG logos normally blend more naturally into photographs than logos with a solid box behind them.
Ownership marks are often subtle, while promotional captions usually need to be larger and easier to notice.
Does a Watermark Protect Your Copyright?
A watermark can help identify the creator or owner of an image and may discourage casual reuse. It can also make it easier for viewers to recognise where a photograph came from.
Someone may still be able to copy, crop, edit or remove parts of an image. Adding a watermark does not technically prevent copying and does not by itself establish every legal aspect of copyright ownership.
