Rotate vs Flip: What's the Difference?
| Action | What it does | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Rotate Left | Turns the image 90° counter-clockwise | Fix sideways photos or scanned pages |
| Rotate Right | Turns the image 90° clockwise | Correct phone and camera orientation |
| Flip Horizontal | Mirrors the image from left to right | Change the direction a person, object or graphic faces |
| Flip Vertical | Mirrors the image from top to bottom | Create inverted or reflection-style effects |
When Is Rotate & Flip Useful?
Correct Phone Photos
Fix images that display sideways or upside down after being moved between devices or apps.
Scans and Documents
Rotate scanned pages, receipts, diagrams or screenshots into the correct reading direction.
Product Photography
Correct product images before uploading them to a shop, marketplace or catalogue.
Mirror Effects
Flip a subject or graphic to change the direction it faces without re-shooting or redrawing it.
Website Images
Prepare images so they sit correctly within articles, galleries, banners and page layouts.
Photography Projects
Experiment with mirrored compositions or alternative orientations for creative presentation.
Why Width and Height Sometimes Swap
The original width becomes the output height, and the original height becomes the output width.
The image keeps the same width and height because it has not changed between portrait and landscape orientation.
Like a 90° rotation, the width and height swap because the image changes orientation.
Flipping horizontally or vertically does not change the pixel dimensions of the image.
A 90° turn changes which dimension is horizontal and which is vertical, so the numbers swap naturally.
Should You Keep JPG, PNG or WebP?
JPG
Useful for photographs and broad compatibility. JPG does not support transparency.
PNG
Useful for graphics, screenshots and images where transparent pixels or lossless output matter.
WebP
A modern format that can be useful for efficient website images and can support transparency.
Rotation and flipping are separate from file-format conversion. Saving as JPG or WebP may apply compression, while PNG output is lossless.
When Should You Be Careful With Flipping?
A horizontal flip will mirror any signs, labels, writing or numbers visible in the image.
Brand marks and symbols may look wrong when mirrored, so check the final preview carefully.
Flipping a document is usually not the same as rotating it. Use rotate for pages that are simply sideways.
Mirroring can change where a subject appears to look or move, which can affect the balance of a composition.
Edit the Image Directly in Your Browser
The tool is designed to perform its rotate, flip and export operations in your browser during normal use, without requiring a separate desktop image editor.
Use the Image Crop tool if you also want to change composition, aspect ratio or remove unwanted areas around the subject.
Rotate & Flip Image FAQ
Is the Rotate & Flip Image Tool free?
Yes. The basic rotate and flip features can be used without payment or creating a MixPlay account.
Can I rotate JPG, PNG and WebP images?
Yes. The current tool supports JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP image files.
Can I rotate the image more than once?
Yes. Each click changes the rotation by another 90 degrees.
Can I mirror an image?
Yes. Use Flip Horizontal for a left-to-right mirror effect, or Flip Vertical for a top-to-bottom mirror.
Does rotating change the image dimensions?
A 90° or 270° turn swaps width and height. A 180° turn keeps the same width and height.
Will flipping change the dimensions?
No. A horizontal or vertical flip changes the direction of the pixels but keeps the same width and height.
Will the image lose quality?
PNG output is lossless. JPG and WebP downloads use browser encoding and may apply compression.
Can I keep the original file format?
Yes. The download format menu includes an option to keep the same format as the source image.
Does the tool work on phones and tablets?
The page is designed for modern desktop, tablet and mobile browsers that support the required image features.
What is the current upload limit?
The current tool accepts supported images up to 15 MB.
Does MixPlay add a watermark?
No. The downloaded image does not contain a MixPlay watermark.
Why does text look backwards after a horizontal flip?
A horizontal flip mirrors every pixel, including letters and numbers. Use rotation instead if the image only needs to be turned.
