UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE

JPG vs PNG: Which Format Should You Use?

JPG and PNG are both common image formats, but they solve different problems. Converting everything to PNG is not automatically an improvement.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

What JPG to PNG Conversion Can — and Cannot — Do

✓ It creates a lossless PNG file

After conversion, the new PNG can be saved and handled without using JPG's lossy compression format.

✕ It cannot restore lost JPG detail

Detail already discarded when the original JPG was compressed cannot be reconstructed simply by changing the file format.

✓ It can help with compatibility

Conversion is useful when an application, website or workflow specifically requires a PNG file.

✕ It does not create transparency

JPG files contain no transparent pixels, so converting one to PNG does not automatically remove the background.

✓ It avoids another JPG save

A PNG version can be useful when you want to continue editing without repeatedly saving in a lossy format.

✕ It does not guarantee a smaller file

PNG photographs are frequently much larger than equivalent JPG images.

Bigger is normal.

If your converted PNG is considerably larger than the original JPG, that does not mean the converter has failed. PNG uses a different compression method and is often less space-efficient for photographs.

PRACTICAL USES

When Is Converting JPG to PNG Useful?

🎨

Further Editing

Convert when you want a lossless format for additional editing and future exports.

🖥️

Presentations

PNG is commonly supported by presentation, graphics and document applications.

🧩

Required File Format

Convert when an application, upload form or workflow specifically asks for PNG.

📷

Photography Workflow

A PNG can serve as a lossless intermediate file, although TIFF may also be used in professional workflows.

📄

Documents & Graphics

PNG can work particularly well where sharp edges, text or graphic elements are important.

🗂️

Consistent Project Files

Converting can help when a particular project requires all source images in the same format.

FORMAT GUIDE

Which Format Should You Choose?

📷 Choose JPG when…

You have an ordinary photograph and keeping the file reasonably small is important.

🖼️ Choose PNG when…

You need lossless image storage, sharp graphics or an application specifically requests PNG.

⚡ Consider WebP when…

Your main goal is efficient images for a modern website while retaining good visual quality.

TRANSPARENCY EXPLAINED

Will Converting JPG to PNG Remove the Background?

No. PNG supports transparent pixels, but JPG does not. Because the original JPG contains no transparency information, a normal format conversion has no way of knowing which parts should become transparent.

Need a transparent background instead?

Use MixPlay's separate Background Remover to remove unwanted background areas first, then save the cut-out in a format that supports transparency.

IMAGE QUALITY

Does JPG to PNG Improve Photo Quality?

Converting a JPG to PNG does not make the original photograph sharper or recover detail that was previously lost. The PNG starts with the pixels contained in the JPG you upload.

🔍

Existing Detail

The converter cannot recreate fine texture or detail already removed by JPG compression.

💾

Future Saves

PNG avoids applying another layer of JPG-style lossy compression when the PNG itself is saved.

📏

Pixel Dimensions

Converting format does not inherently increase the number of useful pixels in the photograph.

BROWSER-BASED CONVERSION

Convert the Image Directly in Your Browser

The converter is designed to read and convert the selected JPG using browser-side image processing rather than requiring a desktop image-conversion application.

Another useful check

Changing an image from JPG to PNG should not be treated as a dedicated privacy-cleaning step. If you want to inspect EXIF, GPS or other image metadata before sharing, use MixPlay's Metadata Viewer & Remover.

HELPFUL ANSWERS

JPG to PNG Converter FAQ

Is the JPG to PNG converter free?

Yes. The basic converter can be used without payment or creating a MixPlay account.

Why is my PNG larger than the JPG?

JPG is designed to compress photographs efficiently using lossy compression. PNG uses lossless compression, so photographic PNG files are often considerably larger.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. It prevents the PNG output itself from using JPG compression, but it cannot restore image detail already removed from the JPG.

Will converting to PNG give my image transparency?

No. JPG does not store transparency, so ordinary format conversion cannot determine which pixels should become transparent.

Will the image dimensions stay the same?

Normal images retain their dimensions. This converter may reduce extremely large images to a maximum side of 4096 pixels for more reliable browser processing.

Is PNG always better than JPG?

No. JPG is usually more efficient for ordinary photographs, while PNG can be preferable for lossless editing, graphics, screenshots or workflows requiring PNG.

Should I use PNG for website photographs?

Not necessarily. Large photographic PNG files can slow page loading. JPG or WebP is often more efficient when file size matters.

Does the converter add a watermark?

No. MixPlay does not add a visible MixPlay watermark to the converted PNG.

What is the current upload limit?

The current converter accepts JPG and JPEG images up to 15 MB.

Can I use the converter on a phone or tablet?

The page is designed to work with modern desktop, tablet and mobile browsers that support the required browser image features.

Can I convert PNG back to JPG?

Yes. Use MixPlay's separate PNG to JPG converter when you need a JPG version of a PNG image.
