UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE

PNG vs JPG: Which Format Is Better?

Neither format is always better. PNG is strong for graphics and transparency, while JPG is often more efficient for photographs and general sharing.

TRANSPARENCY EXPLAINED

What Happens to Transparent Areas?

JPG does not support transparency. Any transparent or semi-transparent pixels in the PNG must therefore be placed over a solid colour when the JPG is created.

White background

A safe general choice for product photos, documents and images that will appear on white pages.

Black or dark background

Useful when the image is intended for a dark design or when pale edges need stronger contrast.

Brand colour

A custom colour can make a transparent PNG fit a particular campaign, shop or visual identity.

Check soft edges

Semi-transparent edges around logos or cut-outs may look different when placed over a new solid colour.

Transparency cannot be kept in JPG.

If you need transparent pixels in the finished image, keep the file as PNG or use another format that supports transparency.

QUALITY GUIDE

Choosing the Best JPG Quality

Higher quality usually preserves more fine detail but creates a larger file. Lower quality can reduce storage and upload size, but visible compression artefacts become more likely.

90–100%

Useful for important photographs, portfolios and detailed images where quality matters most.

80–89%

A strong general starting range for websites, product photos and everyday images.

65–79%

Useful when smaller files matter more, such as email, quick sharing or lighter web images.

20–64%

Produces stronger compression and can show obvious quality loss, especially around fine detail and text.

Good starting point: 85–90%

Convert once, inspect the preview and then reduce the quality gradually if you need a smaller file.

PRACTICAL USES

When Is PNG to JPG Conversion Useful?

🌐

Website Photos

JPG can be a practical choice for photographic content where transparency is not required.

📧

Email Attachments

A JPG may be easier to send when the original PNG is much larger than necessary.

🛒

Product Listings

Replace transparency with white or another background before uploading to a marketplace.

📱

Social Media

JPG is widely accepted and works well for photographs and many promotional images.

💾

Reduce Storage

Detailed photographic PNGs can be large. JPG compression may reduce their file size significantly.

🧩

Compatibility

JPG is supported by a huge range of websites, apps, devices and older software.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

What Conversion Can — and Cannot — Improve

✓ It can reduce file size

Photographic PNG files often become smaller as JPG, depending on the chosen quality and image detail.

✕ It does not guarantee a smaller file

Simple PNG graphics can already be efficient, so a high-quality JPG may sometimes be larger.

✓ It gives you quality control

The quality slider lets you choose a balance between visual detail and output file size.

✕ It does not improve original detail

Converting formats cannot create extra sharpness or detail that was not already present in the PNG.

BEFORE YOU CONVERT

Three Things Worth Checking First

🧼

Do You Need Transparency?

If yes, keep a PNG copy. JPG will flatten transparent areas onto a solid background.

🔎

Does the Image Contain Text?

Logos, screenshots and small text can show compression artefacts more easily than photographs.

💾

Do You Need a Smaller File?

Start around 85–90% quality and reduce gradually rather than jumping straight to a very low setting.

BROWSER-BASED CONVERSION

Convert the Image Directly in Your Browser

The converter is designed to process the selected PNG using browser-side image handling, so you do not need to install a separate desktop conversion program.

Format conversion is not a privacy-cleaning step.

If you want to inspect EXIF, GPS or other metadata before sharing, use MixPlay's Metadata Viewer & Remover separately.

HELPFUL ANSWERS

PNG to JPG Converter FAQ

Is the PNG to JPG converter free?

Yes. The basic converter can be used without payment or creating a MixPlay account.

Why does the background colour matter?

PNG can contain transparent pixels, but JPG cannot. The colour you choose fills those transparent areas during conversion.

What background colour should I choose?

White is a common neutral choice, but black, grey or a brand colour can work better depending on where the final JPG will be used.

Will PNG to JPG reduce image quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so some image information is discarded. At high quality settings the visible difference may be small.

Why is my converted JPG larger than the PNG?

Conversion does not guarantee a smaller file. Some PNG graphics are already very efficient, while a high-quality JPG can be larger.

Can I convert a transparent PNG?

Yes. Choose the solid background colour that should replace the transparent areas before converting.

Does the converter change image dimensions?

Normal images retain their dimensions. Very large images may be reduced to a maximum side of 4096 pixels for reliable browser processing.

Does the tool work on phones and tablets?

The page is designed for modern desktop, tablet and mobile browsers that support the required image features.

Does MixPlay add a watermark?

No. The downloaded JPG does not contain a MixPlay watermark.

What is the current upload limit?

The current converter accepts PNG files up to 15 MB.

Should I use PNG or JPG for a logo?

PNG is usually better for logos when transparency and crisp edges are important. JPG is better suited to flattened images without transparency.

What quality should I use for a website photo?

A setting around 80–90% is a useful starting range. Check the preview and file size, then adjust to suit the image.
