What Makes This More Than a Basic Crop Tool?
Exact Pixel Crop
Enter an exact crop width and height when a project requires specific dimensions.
Custom Ratios
Create your own aspect ratio rather than being limited to a fixed collection of presets.
Social Presets
Quickly prepare common square, portrait, vertical and landscape image shapes.
Composition Guides
Use Rule of Thirds, Centre or Golden Ratio guides while deciding where to place your subject.
Live Dimensions
See the current pixel width and height of your selected crop while editing.
Fine Straightening
Correct small horizon or architectural alignment problems without being restricted to 90-degree rotation.
Choose a Composition Guide
A guide does not change the finished photograph. It is simply an overlay that can help you judge the placement of subjects while cropping.
Rule of Thirds
Divides the frame into thirds horizontally and vertically. Important subjects can be placed near the intersections rather than directly in the centre.
Centre Composition
Useful for portraits, symmetrical architecture, product photography and subjects intended to sit directly in the middle of the frame.
Golden Ratio
Uses positions close to 38% and 62% of the frame to provide another visual guide for balancing important parts of a composition.
Common Image Crop Ratios
| Ratio | Shape | Typical Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Custom | Creative cropping and removing unwanted image areas. |
| 1:1 | Square | Profile images, product pictures and square social posts. |

| 4:5 | Portrait | Portrait-oriented social images and product photography. |
| 9:16 | Vertical | Stories, Reels, Shorts and vertical mobile content. |
| 4:3 | Standard | General photography, screens and presentations. |
| 3:2 | Classic Photo | DSLR photography and many traditional photographic prints. |
Social-media platforms can change their recommended image dimensions over time, so check current requirements when preparing important commercial or advertising artwork.
Image Crop Tool FAQ
Is the MixPlay Image Crop Tool free?
Yes. The available cropping and export features can be used without purchasing editing software or creating a MixPlay account.
Which image formats can I upload?
The crop tool accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP images.
What is the maximum upload size?
This version of the tool accepts supported image files up to 20 MB.
Can I choose an exact crop size?
Yes. Enter a width and height in pixels under Exact Crop Size and select Set Crop Size.
Can I create my own aspect ratio?
Yes. Enter the two ratio values under Custom Ratio. For example, enter 5 and 4 for a 5:4 crop.
What does the straighten control do?
Straighten provides fine rotation in small increments, which is useful when a horizon or building is only slightly crooked.
Do the composition guides appear in my downloaded image?
No. Rule of Thirds, Centre and Golden Ratio guides are editing aids only and are not added to the downloaded photograph.
Can I choose the final output dimensions?
Yes. Enter an optional export width and height. If both boxes are left blank, the tool uses the natural dimensions of the selected crop.
Can I export JPG, PNG or WebP?
Yes. You can keep the original format or choose JPG, PNG or WebP before downloading.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
Cropping removes pixels outside the selected area. Export quality can also be affected by the selected file format, quality level and output dimensions.
Is my photograph uploaded to MixPlay?
The cropping operation in this tool is designed to take place in your browser. The selected photograph is read by the browser so it can be displayed and processed locally by the editor.
