Cat Café Chaos: The Great Midnight Catastrophe
“There were three rules at Whiskers Café: no climbing, no stealing cakes, and absolutely no fishing in the goldfish bowl.”
At exactly seven o’clock, Mrs Whiskerton unlocked the doors of the most unusual café in town.
Whiskers Café was famous for three things: delicious cakes, freshly brewed coffee and a family of remarkably curious cats.
There was Marmalade, a ginger tom who believed every cake belonged to him.
There was Biscuit, a tiny kitten who could somehow disappear inside almost any cupboard.
And then there was Professor Pudding, a distinguished grey tabby whose favourite hobby was pretending not to understand the rules.
Mrs Whiskerton had spent the entire morning preparing for the annual Great Café Bake-Off.
The counters were polished, the cakes carefully arranged and the refrigerator filled with fresh cream.
Everything was perfect.
Almost.
At precisely five minutes past seven, Marmalade spotted the enormous strawberry cake sitting proudly on the counter.
He approached it cautiously. He sniffed the cream. He inspected a strawberry. Then he made a decision that would change the entire morning.
With one enormous leap, Marmalade landed in the middle of the cake.
Cream exploded across the counter.
Biscuit jumped in surprise and knocked over a basket of apples.
Professor Pudding, determined to investigate the noise, climbed straight into the refrigerator.
Within seconds the café resembled a small bakery after a particularly enthusiastic earthquake.
The commotion had attracted the attention of Captain Bubbles, the café’s resident goldfish.
Captain Bubbles had survived three years of curious kittens by mastering one important skill: looking completely uninteresting.
Unfortunately, this time his plan failed.
Biscuit noticed the movement inside the glass bowl.
Her eyes widened.
Her whiskers twitched.
Her little paw rose slowly towards the water.
Just then, Mrs Whiskerton returned from the storeroom.
“WHAT,” she shouted, “HAS HAPPENED TO MY CAFÉ?”
Every cat froze.
Marmalade looked innocent.
Biscuit hid behind a fallen apple.
Professor Pudding remained inside the refrigerator, pretending he had been there all morning.
Mrs Whiskerton surveyed the catastrophe.
The strawberry cake had been demolished, the fruit scattered and the kitchen completely rearranged.
Yet something unexpected happened.
The first customers arrived and burst into laughter.
They took photographs, ordered coffee and declared that this was the most entertaining café they had ever visited.
By lunchtime, a queue stretched along the street.
Mrs Whiskerton sighed, smiled and added a brand-new item to the menu:
“The Catastrophe Cake – served with extra cream and absolutely no guarantees.”
And from that day onwards, Whiskers Café became famous not for its perfect cakes, but for its perfectly imperfect cats.
